The plan was simple – fly to Tehran, then reach Bandar Anzali by bus, pick up the bikes and the torch relay and deliver it all on the 27th of May to Mary in Turkmenistan, which means driving about 1700 kilometers in 28 days. Overall, our route ran quite flat. Sometimes it was more bumpy, especially the one that led us through a beautiful Iranian desert or heavily exploited, giving an impression as if a few days earlier was bombed, or the one that took us from crossing the Iran-Turkmenistan in Sarakhs to the city of Mary. Sometimes, however, the road was mountainous, especially when the head came to us the idea to go simply through the mountains, because better, more beautiful, away from the noisy highway and the flashes that could get tired mentally even the most persistent. Mountains tired of us physically, forcing two days to pull / push bike (sometimes one piece in two or three persons) with panniers, in the mud. And everytime we thought ” it seemed to us that now it will be flat”, this is repeated over and over again the phrase allowed us to survive and hoping that it actually be so, push and pull bikes upstairs. Pass was eventually captured, and this day signed up as one of the more crazy in our lives, because how can you not talk about madness for pushing / pulling a bicycle from level 0 to 2049 m above sea level?
